The approach taken for the renovation and extension of this Northcote residence is to retain the front section of the existing house and to add a modern interpretative upper floor that corresponds to the building’s heritage section. The architectural language of the wrapped and pitched roof, and modern Colorbond cladding and glazing is applied to express the contrast between the old and new.
When one enters the existing heritage section, located in the front, the history and past reveals itself. The old passage leads to the open space of the new kitchen, dining and living areas, all boasting a connection to the covered alfresco area. The functional and private courtyard, located in the back, is designed to provide the property’s occupants with memorable outdoor experiences.
Externally, this property shows vivid contrasts of colour and material, and the old and new.
